An upcoming competition promises some flair and a lot of smoke.

At the center of it all is to be hookah — specially made, flavored tobacco smoked through a water pipe.

Earl “Yogi” Halbert is calling all hookah lounges and their chefs to participate in a Battle of the Bowls, planned for 9 p.m. June 8 at the Xclusive Ultra Lounge & Cafe, 953 E. Sahara Ave.

Beyond the battle, the event will allow those in the industry to network and rally support for their unique product, Halbert said. A championship belt and possible prizes are at stake.

“Hookah is an experience,” Halbert said. “And everyone has a different type, how they prepare and the way it tastes and the way it’s smoked.”

The popularity of hookah has gained steam in Las Vegas in the last decade. Lounges and cafes around the Southwest have popped up for those 18 or older, as per Nevada law, to gather and puff among friends.

The competition is open to the public. Tickets are $20 at the door and $15 in advance.

Comedian Mike P. will host the event, and live entertainment will be provided. A panel of celebrity judges is being compiled.

Each contestant will be required to use the same brand of tobacco in the competition. Rules regarding charcoal, hookah size and flavor selection will apply.

Judge s’ criteria will be on a scale of one to five for five categories: first taste of bowl flavor and hit; hookah hitting smoothness ; harsh flavor (for negative aspects) ; smokiness; and bowl name creativity. the entry fee is $200.

The co-owners of Kaliopi Hookah & Lounge, 6985 W. Sahara Ave., are already plotting what their signature entry will be.

The lounge boasts flavors such as Fruit Loops, Jetlag, Sunshine Megatron and Philippine Sunrise.

“My goal is to put our name on the map,” co-owner Anthony Layao said .

The business was named after Layao’s daughter.

Fellow co-owner Ko , who goes by one name, said the lounge’s brand is different than those at other lounges.

“A lot of them are used to each other, and their main focus is outdoing each other, not just being themselves,” he said. “They all look the same.”

Halbert also invites frequent hookah smokers to encourage their favorite lounge to enter the competition.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Opportunity Village, 6300 W. Oakey Blvd. Sponsors also are still needed for the event.

WOODBRIDGE — Mo Mawa is a night owl who enjoys parties, bars and staying out late.

“I love to go out and to enjoy myself,” he said.

So after giving up his general contracting business, and after several more years owning a C-Town grocery store and liquor store, he and his business partner, Ali Hablawi, went into the restaurant and bar business.

They’ve operated hookah bars and restaurants in Morristown and Hackensack, and in August, they took over Zuzu, a BYOB Mediterranean restaurant in the Fords section. they kept the name but added a heated outdoor hookah lounge.

Mawa and Hablawi, both 46 and both natives of Jordan who moved to the United States 30 years ago, said Zuzu blends American and Middle-Eastern cultures.

“During the week, we have American bands, open mics and karaoke, and on the weekend we have the “Arabian Nights’ with belly dancing and live singers,” Hablawi said.

Hablawi said there is “nothing really similar” about the two worlds

Also known as shisha, hookah is a water pipe used in smoking that is most common in Middle East and Asia. Hookahs are used for smoking tobacco as well as various other forms such as fruity flavored hookah which are tobacco free materials. this interestingly triggers massive popularity of smoking in restaurants and cafes in major US cities.

Before considering the thought of going into a hookah bar, take a little step further to learn first the basics of how to hookah this is followed by a certain series of steps which will contribute to your knowledge of how to hookah. Always check for the following things before anything else: stem, base, tongs, tray, and a bowl that has grommets To prepare the hookah, fill the base with water of up to an inch to cover the stem while keeping the base moist. Mount the shaft inside tightly and then, put a bowl of grommet on the tray and placed them on top of the shaft.

In addition to that, you need the following things to properly set up you bowl: flavored tobacco, tongs, and metal bowl. the tobacco is firstly broken in order to get a smooth smoke and the flavored tobacco is sprinkled into the given bowl. Use a toothpick to poke the tin foil and create small holes.

This is done in case you are not using the metal bowl screen from a custom hookah. take a piece of lighted charcoal and placed it on the bowl of metal screen or tin foil. Then, you can puff a few or so and hookah your way into the night.

One important point to be kept in mind is that the flavored tobacco should never be burnt. the smoke evaporating is a result of heating the mixed ingredients such has honey, glycerin, molasses and the tobacco. if you have not put the charcoal properly, you will not achieve the best smoke result.

Hookah Love: Getting the Proper Hookah

The appearance of full-page color ads for a hookah establishment in recent issues of the Daily Lobo prompted me to revisit the issue of hookahs and your health. Many people think that smoking hookah is harmless, or at least better for you than cigarettes. the popular myth is that the water filters out the bad stuff. not so. please read on. a hookah is a water pipe. Other names for hookah include nargile, sheesha, okka, kalyan and hubbly-bubbly. the pipe is used for smoking a flavored-tobacco mixture, which is placed in a small bowl at the top.

From the bowl, a hollow pipe leads straight down into a chamber called the base, which is partly filled with water. the pipe extends below the water’s surface. from the side of the base, above the water line, a hose leads to a mouthpiece.

To smoke hookah, you light a piece of charcoal, place it on top of the tobacco mixture, put the mouthpiece in your mouth, and suck hard. the smoke goes down the pipe, bubbles up through the water into the air at the top of the base chamber, up the hose and into your lungs.

Hookahs have been around for centuries, probably originating in the Middle East or India, where it is a common social custom for men to gather, smoking and chatting for hours.

In the U.S., the hookah has become popular in recent years, especially with young people of both sexes. Hookah smoking is promoted as an aesthetic social activity, touting the sweet smell of tobacco and the bubbling sound of the water as pleasant, relaxing influences.

A typical hookah session lasts two or three hours and involves several friends smoking from the same pipe. Commercial hookah bars have sprung up across the country. there are at least five here in Albuquerque.

Typically, the mixture smoked in a hookah pipe is one-third tobacco and two-thirds flavoring. Flavorings may include molasses, dried fruit, honey and other ingredients. the resulting aroma was likened to a baking apple pie by one hookah-selling website. Sounds pretty benign, doesn’t it? it isn’t. Like many fads, it is hyped with false claims in order to increase its popularity and profits.

Tobacco is tobacco, no matter how you get it, and tobacco smoke is hazardous.

In fact, hookah smokers fill their lungs with more smoke than cigarette smokers, and here’s why:

Cigarette smoke is uncomfortably hot if you inhale it deeply. Hookah smoke has been cooled by its passage through the water. in addition, you have to inhale hard to pull the smoke through the pipe and water. the result is cooler smoke going farther into your lungs. Add to that the duration of a typical hookah session, and the result is huge volumes of smoke being deposited into your lungs.

A World Health Organization study showed that one hookah session can deliver as much smoke into your lungs as 100 cigarettes. five packs! Rarely does a cigarette smoker get that much in one day.

Tobacco smoke contains nicotine, a highly addictive substance that is not filtered out by the water in a hookah. in addition to nicotine, you are pulling other dangerous substances through that hose.

Tar is not water-soluble, so it comes through the pipe, the same amount in one session as in a whole pack of cigarettes.

Tar causes cancer. Other carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) also make it through, like heavy metals and carbon monoxide. in fact, because of the burned charcoal on top of the tobacco mixture, hookah smoke has a higher level of heavy metals and carbon monoxide than cigarette smoke.

Hookah smokers risk getting lung, lip, tongue and bladder cancer.

As you must know by now, tobacco smoke affects the cardiovascular system, causing an increased blood pressure and heart rate and increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Smoke of any kind is also a lung irritant, which can trigger asthma and allergies. and, of course, the bad effects of any kind of secondhand smoke are well-studied.

In addition to the tobacco, there are the smoked flavorings to consider. unfortunately, nobody has studied the effects of inhaling dried apricots, but I would bet they aren’t all good.

Finally, think about sharing the mouthpiece. It’s like kissing everyone in the group. Hookah pipes can spread herpes, flu, strep throat, a cold, even tuberculosis.

I’m a big believer in social gatherings and relaxation time. By all means, gather away, and relax like crazy.

But if you are concerned with the health of your young lungs, think about gathering around a cup of tea or coffee, or relaxing with exercise and a bath instead of a water pipe.
