FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ — Brownie’s Marine Group, inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: “BWMG.” www.browniesmarinegroup.com) today announced that its patented technology has now been integrated into the Kon Tiki Royal USKTR-US lifejacket and has successfully met, and exceeded, standards codified in the new MSC 200 (80) SOLAS regulations. Of all the international conventions dealing with maritime safety, the most important is the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, better known as SOLAS (http://www.imo.org/).

The new standards that went into full effect in July 2010, apply to life jackets stored on board many newly-built, charter, passenger and cruise ships in the world. the extensive tests on these lifejackets were carried out by Underwriter Laboratories of North Carolina, USA. Brownie’s Marine Group is the exclusive US distributor and patent holder for this broad reaching technology. the KTR-US exceeds the requirements of the previous regulations considerably in terms of buoyancy and turning power across a broader range of body types. Comfort and stowage dimensions were two additional critical considerations in the design and acceptability of the KTR-US.

Robert Carmichael, Brownie’s Chairman and CEO stated, “We are committed to developing products that keep people safe on the water.  Our technological advances combined with the other feature advantages of the Kon Tiki Royal US design, are really a winner for the wearer. In addition to the regulated usage, we intend to aggressively promote this device into the leisure boating and yachting market as a smarter alternative to the minimum standard devices required for private boat owners. we believe that the current life jacket market in this category approximates a $25,000,000 industry. having exclusive distribution rights for the first dual approved vest gives us a major competitive advantage and will be a key catalyst in our goal of returning to profitability.”

How do you insert the hose to a hookah?

It seems like a simple question but when i try to put my hose into the hole, it is too little and it falls out. is my hookah just a cheap one or is there a certain way to do this that i'm not doing?

Has anyone ever seen a marshmallow flavored shisha?

All the flavors I've seen and I've never seen a marshmallow flavor. What about chocolate chip cookie as well?

The Reserve opens and I can finally drink on a roof in O4W

You’d think a city like Atlanta with equal parts urban skyline, stretching greenery and temperate climate (okay, not so much this summer) would be home to tons of favorite rooftop bars—but no! Where are all my rooftop bars at!? We certainly have enough vacant high-rises to stick on top a few watering holes. I love rooftop bars with a passion, but many of the ones in Atlanta, like those at the W Hotels, are too fancy for everyday alcoholism. Leave it to the corner of Edgewood and Boulevard to strike the right balance of trendy lounge and downtown nonchalance with the Reserve.

The Reserve opened this past Thursday above Cafe Circa with Latin music playing, cigars handed out and a few hookahs in the front. The hookahs didn’t really take off—it seemed weird watching people smoke hookah while bolstered up at a high pub tables—but guests seemed to like it. The space is comfortable and not overdecorated, a welcome change again from the other pretentious rooftop bars in the city. The bar is only on the second story and facing southward from Edgewood, so it’s not exactly a glamorous city view. however, it’s the perfect environment to chill out with a nice drink without the posing. (Do I pose?)

Why is it called The Reserve? Is it a sanctuary in the Old Fourth Ward, or are they budging you to make a reservation? and now that O4W has been overtaken as the new nightlife scene (with the popularity of the Sound Table and the transformation of Noni’s Saturday night dance party to the new frat make-out spot), what neighborhood could there possibly be left to gentrify? I pondered these looming questions while drinking cocktails created by mixologist Ava Kopieczek and eating tapas from Executive Chef Hopeton Hibbert.

I’m not sure Atlanta knows what tapas are, and if so, it seems like they don’t care. all new restaurants have to call everything tapas. The food was tasty, like goat empanadas with habanero tomato sauce, but those are just h’orderves plain and simple. What’s so wrong with calling them h’orderves? I think it’s a nice name. I went to Entice-A on Ponce for the Scoutmob coupon, and they served up straight-up main dishes and called them tapas. does the name make them taste better?

Our waitress was fantastic, having just moved back to Atlanta from London and ready to share all her feelings on the Atlanta scene. As long as she kept the drinks coming, we were more than happy to listen. with the weather cooling, but not my appetite for a delicious drink, the Reserve may become a go-to spot when I need to get some fresh air.

New Incense Blends

The incenses I crafted with my apprentice on the best incense-making day ever are now ready for purchase in the Botanica! They took longer than I had planned to properly dry, but I can say from burning them that the blends were well worth the wait!

Egyptian Kyphi – this 2000 year old recipe recorded by Plutarch has the traditional number of sixteen ingredients. it took a month to craft by hand using honey wine, raisins, herbs, and resins. this Kyphi includes some very rare resins and herbs making it a worthwhile purchase instead of trying to hunt down the ingredients yourself. it smells lush and rich, much stronger than modern incenses. it can be burned traditionally at dusk as an offering to deities or also stored or carried like amber resin for the scent unburned.

Thoth-Hermes Kyphi – this Egyptian kyphi incense is made with eight different herbs, spices, resins, fruits, and honey wine which have an association with Thoth and Hermes. Burn to invoke the god of intellect, writing, science, astronomy, philosophy, medicine, botany, and the magical arts. this incense blend works well for those who follow a Greek or Egyptian path or those who follow a syncretic blend of both as many ancients did. Members of the Golden Dawn and practitioners of Ceremonial magic will also find this blend a useful and richly scented addition to their magical rites.

Bee Oracle Incense – aka “Fume of Melissae”, this kyphi-like pill incense is handcrafted from rare bee propolis resin mixed with bee pollen, home made mead, local honey, lemon balm, mugwort, and vervain. Perfect for use by Melissae priestesses, beekeepers, mead makers, and devotees of Demeter, Artemis, Aphrodite, Dionysus, Hermes, or Apollo (and sometimes Persephone). as the Melissae and bee nymphs were known for using honey and mead to receive prophecy, it can also be used by diviners and seers in their oracular work. this is an original recipe not to be found anywhere else.

Magical Herbal Smoking Blends

I also had time this week to craft more of my herbal smoking blends. These three are very useful for magic. Each blend is mildly entheogenic making them useful for ritual, trance, divination, and communication with spirits. best smoked in a water-pipe as herbs can burn fairly hot, but seasoned smokers will have no problems with hand rolled cigarettes. Each smoking blend can also be substituted as a herbal incense or tea if you are not a smoker.

Hedgecrosser’s Smoke – this is the newest recipe and is a blend of eight herbs as eight is the magical number of the pillar or axis mundi. Each herb has been specially selected to enhance the magician, witch, or shaman’s ability to cross between the worlds and commune with spirits. the Wild Lettuce and Wormwood have mind-altering effects very useful for inducing hedgecrossing as the “high” from these herbs still leaves you able to be focused and sharp. the other herbs are either for inducing astral travel or are traditionally for protection while travelling. I’ve tested it out and it most definitely works. Expect to have some strange experiences and strange sights for the whole day after smoking just one portion. despite this effect, Hedgecrosser’s Smoke is not hallucinogenic.

Visions of the Seer – a favourite blend in the Botanica as it’s always selling out! a blend of smokable herbs all traditional to divination, prophecy, and spirit-sight. useful for oracular work, seidr, divination with runes or tarot, and even divination via necromancy. Non-magical side effects may include mild euphoria, light-headedness, and heightened senses.

Love Smoke – a blend of aphrodisiac and euphoric herbs which mildly mimic the infamous hemp plant. this blend is most definitely narcotic (something I can’t say on Etsy), but every herb used is completely legal. Smoke to get in the mood with your partner and to enhance your experience of pleasure. Love Smoke can also be used as a sedative and relaxant and is lovely when smoked after a long stressful day – it really helps to let go and relax. Due to these properties it also makes a good gentle sleep-aid. Although meant for pleasure smoking, this blend also has magical applications: smoke it or burn it as a herbal incense during the rite of hieros gamos, use it while performing love or sex magic, or smoke or drink Love Smoke as a tea in order to induce trance to help with spirit work and crossing between worlds. It’s a good multipurpose blend to have on hand.

Happy burnings lovely witches!

LONDON – It may be a symbol of Middle Eastern culture and a trendy pastime for British youths, but the shisha water pipe that burns sweet scented tobacco is just as bad for your health as smoking cigarettes.

Research from Britain’s Department of Health and the Tobacco Control Collaborating Center showed that people who regularly smoke shisha can suffer from dangerous levels of carbon monoxide — similar to sucking on a car exhaust or entering a room with a faulty boiler.

"We are trying to say to people ‘if you want to do it, this is the effect it will have on you,’" said Paul Hooper of the Department of Health.

Hooper said results varied on how individuals inhaled the smoke, but one session of shisha smoking can result in carbon monoxide levels at least five times higher than the amount received by one cigarette.

Shisha, traditionally smoked in Middle Eastern countries, has grown in popularity in Britain, with many young people smoking the water pipe in cafes and bars around the country.

The shisha pipe, also known as a hookah or nargile, works by burning flavored tobacco on hot coals and enables users to suck the shisha through an ornate water vessel positioned underneath.

The findings showed that many shisha smokers were unaware of the dangers and didn’t think of shisha as smoking.

Hooper gave an example of a pregnant woman who quit cigarette smoking to protect her unborn baby but kept smoking shisha. when she was tested for carbon monoxide, she had an extreme reading of 70 parts per million (ppm) of carbon monoxide as opposed to 30 ppm expected from a heavy smoker.

Britain’s large Arab population and an increasing number of young Britons often opt for shisha bars, with their lounge style sofas and intimate surroundings, to socialize and relax.

Shisha, which has flavors like melon, cappuccino and apple, is often thought of as a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes.

"People don’t know how bad smoking shisha is. They think because it’s flavored and social, it’s fine. But actually it is as bad, if not worse," said Divya Marwaha, 24, who works at an investment bank in London.

Britain’s smoking ban, which came into effect in July 2007, forced shisha cafes to take their water pipes outside and forced some out of business.

Helen Murphy, 54, from Tunisia, who owned two shisha cafes in London before the ban, turned her business into a beauty spa. Murphy, who no longer smokes, said the ban helped her to quit.

"It is harmful. Of course (people) they do realize but they enjoy having the shisha in their mouth," she added.

"Each puff is more than one cigarette — when you take a puff of the shisha you can see how much smoke is coming out from the nose and the mouth."

However, some shisha cafes said customers who smoke the scented tobacco are aware of the dangers.

"Of course they know," said a waiter at a Middle Eastern restaurant in London. "both (cigarettes and shisha) have nicotine. It is a different way but same result."

Who has the Best hookah? For Scuba Diving, two divers?

Any divers out there that can recommend the best hookah to dive with (not hooker; though that is of interest too). I have seen brownies; Any pros for electric verses gasoline in a boating environment. Thanks for any real life advice on this from people who dive and have used them. I need advice for the southwest Florida gulf and bay waters from a 23 foot boat.

Well diving is an advantage you can could down with a few friends you just want someone to be on the boat to watch for other boaters, need for safety reasons, if all you needs is a BC, regalator and you need to be ceritifed, dive flag so boaters know you are down, there. any scuba place will help you out,

All hookah are life support . As long as they are maintained well . you need to talk to your area dive shop . if you buy it on line or out of a paper you might find it hard to get maintained . Browning's have good reputation . I am not aware of and related accidents ..

Nicotine Buzz: “Hookah bar in Courthouse expecting a soft opening next week”

… In the beginning, customers will only be able to smoke hookah outside on the bar’s expansive patio, as Virginia’s smoking ban requires any indoor smoking area to be completely closed off from the rest of the restaurant and separately ventilated. Dridi is hoping to eventually close off a small area in front of the restaurant for indoor smoking purposes, she says.Read the rest here.

Pavane and Galliard at the Hookah Bar this weekend

Under “Influences” on the MySpace page of local indie-pop quartet Pavane and Galliard, the group lists “all things that are good.” and under “Sounds like,” they answer “see Influences.” Nice.

Actually, Pavane and Galliard — vocalist Lauren Habenicht, guitarist/vocalist Jared Hooker, drummer Ben Falcon and bassist Rip Nolan — sound like clean, stylized, pared-down art-pop. their sound would be downright pretty — Habenicht’s voice is gloriously sweeping and capable — but the deceptively simple guitar melodies suggest something sultrier, jazzier, almost Latin. they would sound theatrical — again, Habenicht has the capacity to go all “Lady Marmalade” — but there’s a groundedness to the music that defies all that’s cloying and cute and vapid about pop.

The band “was formed by song writing team Jared Hooker and Lauren Habenicht in the summer of 2008,” writes The Hookah Bar (38 N. French Broad Ave., Asheville, 252-1522), where Pavane and Galliard performs this Friday. “with the addition of drummer Ben Falcon and bassist Rip Nolan in 2009, they became a four piece. The name Pavane and Galliard comes from a dance pair from the French Renaissance. The Pavane: a slow, stately dance in duple meter, which is usually followed by the Galliard. The Galliard: a fast, leaping dance in triple meter.

“Both Ben and Lauren are graduates of the Music program at UNCA, while Jared is currently working on his degree, in vocal performance, in the same program. Rip completed his Master’s degree in classical performance at the NC School of the Arts.”

The show is Friday, July 30 at 9 p.m. $5 at the door.
